When Life Gives You Limes
I harvested limes from our lime tree today. Finally, it is not 95 degrees with 100 percent humidity and it’s rather pleasant outside. It was a good day to try and accomplish this task, and it should have been simple. Lime trees have thorns somewhat like rose bushes. Like rose bushes, the thorns blend into the branch. When you grab a branch you must be very careful where you place your hand, or you will get pricked. Take it from someone who has learned the hard way and yet continues to get pricked every now and again.
As I was taking the limes off the tree, I got pricked - again. It was the final straw. I had enough! I was mad. I had enough of what and was mad at who you ask? Enough of it all and mad at the universe. Last week was rough. Nothing seemed to be going right, and the biggest issue was completely out of my control. I thought I had left last week in the past and moved on. I was wrong.
That last prick was the proverbial “icing on the cake.” As I sat there I started thinking, “When life gives you limes…” I know the saying generally goes, “When life gives you lemons…” But I was, after all, harvesting limes. The rest of the saying goes, “… make lemonade,” or in my case, “…make limeade.” In other words, make the best out of a seemingly bad situation and let go of what you can’t control. Why was I letting the past control my today? Why was I letting something I could not control ruin the beautiful day God had given me not to mention the wonderful harvest of limes that was coming off the tree?
I think this serves as a good reminder that even when nothing seems to be going right, there is a silver (or lime) lining. When life seems out of control, remember God’s in control. I was so inspired that I designed a Christian t-shirt as a reminder for all of us (get yours at hannahandruth.com).
We will have some rough days, but God’s Got This, and good days will follow with many more blessings than we can imagine!
Now, go make limeade!
