This week we celebrated the 4th of July. Chances are you didn’t need me or the calendar to tell you that. Everywhere you look there are red, white, and blue marketing and 4th of July sales for about anything. Not to mention the vast number of pop up fireworks stands have shown up this week. Many celebrated the 4th of July as Independence Day, but what you probably don’t know is that I also got to celebrate my birthday! I had my oldest son convinced when he was little that the parade and fireworks were for my birthday. Shhhh...I’m not sure he knows the truth yet. It doesn’t matter if you celebrated me and my date of birth or the whole country - I am encouraging you to meditate on the word...Freedom!
Free or Freedom may seem like the obvious topics to write about this time of year here in the USA, but God has been placing those words on my heart for a while now. In fact, I came across a page in my notebook where I started to jot some thoughts down. Scripture and a couple of song titles that I don’t even remember writing. God is clearly in charge of my pen! The events of 2020 have brought these words into a different perspective for many of us. Words such as quarantine, isolation, social distancing, and distant learning are quite the opposite of...Freedom!
What do you think of when you hear the word Freedom or Free?
Speaking of sales, where are my fellow bargain shoppers at? How exciting are the BOGO Free sales at your favorite stores? Free of course means no charge. Oh, boy do I love me a good sale and free stuff. Often times you get what you pay for though, so being careful of the ‘too good to be true’ offers is a good idea. Many times, there are hidden fees or fine print that make Free not really Free!
Now let’s take a look at Biblically free means:
- FREE from guilt & condemnation (Romans 8:1 TPT)
- FREE from anger & bitterness (2 Corin 5:17 TPT)
- FREE from worry & anxiety (Phillipians 4:6 AMPC)
- FREE from seeking others approval (Prov 3:15 NIV)
- FREE to be YOU...the You God created you to be when he formed you in your mother’s womb (Psalm 139:13 ESV)
- FREE from hidden fees and fine print!
Let’s take a music break and look at the lyrics of Redeemed by Big Daddy Weave
Seems like all I can see was the struggle
Haunted by ghosts that lived in my past
Bound up in shackles of all my failures
Wondering how long is this gonna last
Then you look at this prisoner and say to me "son stop fighting a fight that's already been won"
I am redeemed
You set me free
So I'll shake off these heavy chains
Wipe away every stain
Cause I'm not who I used to be
I am redeemed I'm redeemed
All my life I have been called unworthy
Named by the voice of my shame and regret
But when I hear you whisper "child lift up your head"
I remember oh God you're not done with me yet
Jesus tells us in John 8:36, “So if the Son sets you free from sin, then become a true son and be unquestionably free!” (The Passion Translation) I love the wording there...unquestionably free! If Jesus says we are Free, then who are we to question it?
Freedom is defined as the power to act, speak, or think as one wants without hindrance or restraint; liberation from restraint or power of another; deliverance from confinement or bondage. So back to the above question...If Jesus says we are Free then who are we to question it? I thought a lot about this. I know that when I asked Jesus into my heart that I was saved, and He died on the cross to cover the penalty for all my sins. There is absolutely no doubt about this truth! But for some reason, I spent years carrying around the amazing gift of Freedom without fully receiving it. Without opening it up and using it every day. Instead, I kept it safe and sound in a secure location with my other treasures. Therefore, when I should have been living as the ‘set free’ Daughter of The King, I was still dragging around shackles and chains making it impossible to live in biblical Freedom!
Since this week is my birthday, indulge me in another song… Freedom Hymn by Austin French.
I breathe the air of freedom in knowing my life Is better off in Your hands
The past is gone, what's done done, now I'm alive And I'm never gonna look back
I can never be, never be free without You I can never be, never be me without You
This is the sound of chains breaking This is the beat of a heart-changing This is a song of a soul forgiven This is my freedom hymn This is my freedom hymn, my freedom hymn This is my freedom hymn, my freedom hymn
Who the Son sets... (free) Is free in... (deed) Who the Son sets... (free)
Is free in... (deed) Who the Son sets Is free, I'm free, oh-ooh
I’ve heard that song many times, but I listened with a grateful heart and full lungs the other day! I breathed in some of that fresh freedom air! You see, I spent too many years under the weight of guilt, condemnation, anger, bitterness, worry, anxiety, and seeking the approval and validation in worldly people or things. Not anymore. There were some chains broken--hearts changed-- a soul forgiven...Freedom!
I compared versions of Romans 6:23, and the wording in the Amplified Classic stirred up my soul. But the (bountiful) free gift of God is eternal life through (in union with) Jesus Christ our Lord! In my opinion that right there is a gift worth ripping into. And my fellow bargain shoppers did you see the keyword? Free!
No hidden fees …
No fine print…
When you accept the Free gift of eternal life, you will experience Freedom in your earthly life like never before. You will breathe in the air of Freedom knowing your life is better off in His hands. You will be free to be the ‘you’ He created you to be!
Ok...one last song! Free to be me by Francesca Battistelli
Cause I got a couple dents in my fender
Got a couple rips in my jeans
Try to fit the pieces together
But perfection is my enemy
On my own I'm so clumsy
But on your shoulders I can see
I'm free to be me
My soul hears “Child lift up your head and stop fighting a battle that has already been won! Don’t you hear the sound of your soul forgiven? Hear your Freedom Hymn my precious one...You are Free to be YOU” I am Free to be ME!!
I challenge you to take some time to be grateful this week. Grateful for the members of our amazing armed forces--past and present whose service and sacrifice does not go unnoticed or unappreciated! Grateful for the ultimate sacrifice of our Lord Jesus Christ for the best gift ever! Because of these sacrifices we are able to enjoy FREEDOM!
Whoever the Son sets Free is FREE Indeed!!!
Heavenly Father thank you so much for the ultimate free gift of eternal life! Thank you that we do not have to live in condemnation or bondage!
