Love Covers All

When I found out I was going to be a mom for the first time a little over 26 years ago, I finally understood what unconditional love felt like. I’ve shared before that I did not grow up in a Christian home. Even though my parents said they ‘believed’ in God, but not in religion, I saw very little indication that this was true. I knew that my parents loved me, but often times the degree in which they showed it was based on my behavior and performance. I have made peace with my childhood as I believe this model of love was a cycle of just not knowing better. I’m thankful that I now know... Love Covers ALL!

As God was creating this masterpiece within my womb 26 years ago, I already loved this child unconditionally. Before I knew which name would be chosen or if we’d be buying the barbies or the matchbox cars. Before I knew he’d have my facial features but his dad’s darker skin tone. Even though the sickness and discomfort of pregnancy were constant, the love I had for this child I hadn’t even held yet was something far beyond anything I had ever experienced. Love Covers ALL!

For the last 25 ½ years, I have had the incredible privilege to not only watch our first son grow into an amazing young man but God also gifted us with two more amazing sons that are well on their way to adulthood. Parenting is the hardest job I’ve ever been blessed with... I think most of you would agree. This is a gift filled with so much uncertainty and ‘fly by the seat of your pants’ moments. Sometimes all you can do is hang on for the ride and trust the driver... Jesus take the wheel. I am so grateful that it’s not up to me to be in charge of the supernatural GPS--Just the life 360 app. Yes... Love Covers ALL!

I am just beginning to grasp that the kind of unconditional love that I feel for my three amazing sons is only a fraction of the love that our Heavenly Father has for us as his children. We are chosen, handpicked, and created to be LOVED! We truly don’t need more proof than John 3:16. I love the wording in The Passion Translation that states, “He gave His one and only, unique Son as a gift.” That is the ultimate unconditional love. We simply have to believe... Love Covers ALL!

Above all, keep loving one another earnestly, since love covers a multitude of sins. 1 Peter 4:8 Let’s sit on this verse a little bit… Let those words get in deep.

The words ‘above all’ seem pretty straightforward but are also hard to live out. Above ALL means exactly what it says. So even when your teenager snaps at you, if they slam the doors, when they don’t follow a curfew, or continually think your advice is outdated & unreasonable you love them anyway. This also means that when your friends, in person or on social media, have different opinions or beliefs as you do, you love them anyway. All means ‘All’.

Earnestly is defined as:

  • sincere and intense conviction
  • Seriously
  • Not lightly, casually or flippantly

To ‘Love earnestly’ is to sincerely love another person no matter. We are called to take loving others seriously... not casually or flippantly because love covers a multitude of sins as we are reminded at the end of 1 Peter 4:8. Jesus earnestly loved each one of us all the way to the cross. Earnest Love covers ALL!

Proverbs 10:12 says that Hatred stirs up strife, but love covers all offenses. Again, we read the word ‘ALL!’ Nope... no question as to which sins that love is supposed to cover. It doesn’t say ‘love covers most sins’ or ‘love covers all sins except______.’ I especially love the wording in The Passion Translation... Hatred keeps old quarrels alive but love draws a veil over every insult and finds a way to make sin disappear. Yes, that is definitely how... Love covers ALL!

Read the lyrics to You are Loved by Stars Go Dim - letting the words soak in.

We hide pain in the weirdest places Broken souls with smiling faces Fighting for surrender For now and the after, yeah Just look around and you'll see that people Are scared to say how they really feel Oh, we all need a little honesty

You are loved If your heart's in a thousand pieces If you're lost and you're far from reason Just look up; know you are loved Just look up; and know you are loved When it feels like something's missing If it hurts but you can't find healing Just look up, know you are loved Just look up, know you are loved

We're not made to be superheroes Photoshopped, all size zeroes A light not expected But not quite perfected yet Look up; see the sun is shining There's hope on a new horizon Calling you, it's calling

I am pretty sure we can all relate to these lyrics at one time or another. Especially the way the world is right now - we need to be focused and grounded in the truth of God’s Love and who we are in Him. We need to be vessels letting that love that covers it ALL to fill us to overflowing. My goal is to let that love flow through in a multitude of directions. Whether you are wearing a mask in public or not. I choose love no matter color or race. As sons and daughters of the King of Kings, I am challenging you to evaluate your focus. Are you focused on worldly views or Godly views? Just look up and know that YOU ARE LOVED!

LOVE COVERS ALL!

Heavenly Father, thank you that your abundant perfect love does cover it all. It covers all of our differences and our disagreements. It covers our teenagers and also us as we parent those teenagers. I know that your love covers any and all areas where we fall short and are still works in progress. You took all our sins and made them disappear 2000 years ago on the cross in the ultimate act of love. All means All, and for that I am beyond thankful and grateful. In Jesus Name... AMEN!

Blessings~
